Now Playing 4.05

Download

The gadgets had a few tweaks, since it’s last release a year ago, most of which I have forgotten. A few of the tweaks help improve some issues with Windows 7. If you change the zoom level though there will be a pink fringe and I haven’t found a way to fix that yet.

Great job mate .. very great job .. I have been waiting for an update to this gadget all the past year since it had some issued with iTunes, but then when I upgraded to Win7 the gadget became working just fine. There were minor issues like not showing the borders when first song plays until the second song begins, but again this is minor and now I feel the gadget is more compatible and responsive .. awesome dude :D

Hello, thanks for the nice application. Anyway with 4.05 and iTunes 8.1 on Win7 this version cause problems. It seems like there is a memory leak. Sidebar became about 300mb and unresponsive as well as iTunes after using for a while. I had to kill the process. Reverted back to previous version (4.0) and worked fine. Just wanted to let you know! Again thanks.

I am using vista and had no problems with the old version (4.0). This version seems to lag more after the change of song. How can I change back to 4.0 while waiting for this to be fixed (if it's going to be)? By the way thanks for the gadget.

I'm working on a version of NP that's more streamlined and faster. It'll be done in a few days/weeks and I'll post it on here and push it out as an update.

love this gadget so dang much.

it's the best way i've ever seen to find album art to music.

why don't other programs adopt your method for finding album art automatically. it would make sorting so much easier.

Using Vista x64 and foobar2000 - the playing track does not change after the first song is played. Not sure what is not working.

really love your NowPlaying Gadget :)

with the new version ( 4.05 ) i got this ugly ' Bug ? ' :
----------------------------------
script-error:

Line: 1962-x-gadget:///js/main.js

wrong argument

keep up the good gadget work :)

Great gadget, couple of things, is there a way w/ Vista 32/WinAmp 5.552 to keep the gadget from downloading it's own artwork and having it use just what's in the ID3 tag for the MP3? I have all of the artwork for all of my albums, but it keeps going out and grabbing old or odd artwork for some of my music so between that and it not updating the next song very fast, as mentioned by Anonymous, I was going to try the 4.0 version if there is a way to still get it.

Thanks for the great work!! -T

Could their be a bug...? When you update to a newer version?

Thanks for your work!

I love this thing... just one thing, with last.fm, it shows the last track played, not the current one. Using Windows 7 x64, but seem to remember the same issue with Vista x64.

Great gadget, man. I saw something about Songbird support a while back; is this still on the table?

Anonymous said...

Getting the same error as others: Line: 1962-x-gadget:///js/main.js

Then it stops working altogethor unless i restart the sidebar or go into the config and click ok.

Running foobar2k 0.9.4.4, vista 32bit home premium SP1

Same problem as Laura posted about on May 12th except I have 32bit Vista; the playing track does not change after the first song is played

Hey! Do you have a page with a listing of all your gadgets? Or do I have to look through all of your blog to see what you have here? Also, do you have (or know about) any good tutorials on how to develop a decent gadget that looks good and works well?

Anonymous said...

yeah since updating everything freezes (the gadget, my sidebar, and itunes too) after it changes to the second song. love how it saves lyrics to the song in itunes because those come up on my ipod touch, but is there a way to save album art to the little square in the corner of itunes automatically too? thanks so much.

dont know whats the problem here, had foobar first, got a script error, it didnt show switched songs. I then switched to Media Monkey just now, doesnt work at all, just shows me the MM icon... Did several re-installs but had no joy with this gadget, simply does not work here... (vista 64 w/ MM)

I just have one request. Make the lyrics flyout larger. Most lyrics wrap in the small window and it's hard to read properly.

Thanks for the great gadget!

songbird support coming? It would be much appreciated, as I'm thinking of migrating from winamp to songbird and this is one of the sticklers.

my system is in spanish, if i click in aceptar or cancelar, not change data the song.

Help me please!!

Great Gadget. My trouble with it is, when using Foobar, it doesn't change when the song changes, but if I open the options and hit OK (not Cancel) the song/picture will update to correspond with what is playing...
I have failsafe enabled, but it doesn't make a difference..
has anyone else run into this?
Is there a solution?

Thanks!!

Keep up the good work. Still waiting for Songbird Support however. Can you confirm that you will add it? Or are you not going to bother?

Hi,
Really nice gadget - I like it. But there's one problem. I'm using it with Mediamonkey and Windows 7 (RC, Built 7100).
Allways when I close MM there's an error "COM Server Warning" telling me, that there is still an active COM session in the application...
Are you sure to quit ???.
This even prevents Windws from shutting down..
Maybe that's because the Art is coming from the tag !?!
Can you do anything against it ??

Achilleas said...

I pick Winamp and all I get is "Error Downloading Plugin". I really want this to work. Any ideas?

Anonymous said...

I love the widget, but I'd like to second the request for an "only use images for the id3 tag" request. I listen to a lot of Japanese music, which is all tagged with album art, but the widget searches online instead and usually can't find a cover.

Anonymous said...

Hi. Can you make it available also for Virtual Lan Client?
Thank you in advance.

Hi.

I'm using a non-EN-US computer (German settings) and the problem with the wrong zoom level still exists. Would be nice, if this could be fixed in your next release.
If you type 0.8 or 0,8 in the zoom-setting Editbox, the number is recognized as 8.
However, there exists a workaround:
1. Remove the gadget from the sidebar.
2. Open the file "C:\Users\XYZ\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Gadgets\NowPlayingPersistentSettings.txt"
3. Edit the line "~~~~~zoomlevel~~~~~8" to "~~~~~zoomlevel~~~~~0,75" (notice the comma)
4. Check if "~~~~~setting_layout~~~~~" is set to "4"
5. Save the file & close.
6. Add the gadget to your sidebar again.

Note: If you change the settings again, the control is too big again. So change all your settings before using this workaround.
If the zoom level is restored to a big value after a reboot, try to set the file as readonly. In Vista, you can also set the user privileges, so the readonly state can't be unset that easily again.

(Using version 4.05 with Mediamonkey)

i'm a bit disappointed

i've used this plugin for many many months, and for some reason it's stopped searching the internet for album art. nothing's coming up at all in terms of album art lately. has something changed? or is this another reason to do a clean vista install using 64 bit vista

i thing songbird support would be nice...

Hey I'd like to say thanks for the great plugin. I've been using it in windows vista for quite a while and have absolutely loved it. I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and have found that this plugin no longer works with winamp. When I choose the winamp player I get the message: "Error Activating Winamp Plugin". I am using the Now Playing widget v4.05 and Winamp Pro v5.56. I hope this is just something simple I can fix with a setting or a checkbox or something. :) Appreciate all the work you're doing!

Only thing....After selecting the always stay on top option, I just would like the lyrics window to also stay on top, once I have opened it.., and not dissapear like it does if I click elsewhere.... Let the entire gadget stay on top once theoption is selected.....

A thousand Thank Youss for a million hours of Convenient 'Music and Lyrics' on my desktop.. hehehe

Thanks for kind comments. Unfortunately the flyout closing automatically is something I have no control over. I'd really like it to stay open too and have really looked into it but it doesn't seem possible, sorry about that.

Donny said...

It doesn't work anymore. It used to work nicely, now it stopped. All it says is "The download of the specified resource has failed."

What does that mean? Server is down?

krydrita said...

First off, THANK YOU SO MUCH for such an extremely useful gadget as this! I've been using Now Playing for months now, and it's perfect. Runs smoothly, looks wonderful, and I keep discovering more convenient features. It amazes me how many features you were able to cram into a tiny square.

That being said, I just wish that it were compatible with Microsoft Zune software, because I find myself often juggling both the Zune software and WMP as I switch between browsing and buying on Zune, as well as updating my player, and using Now Playing with Windows Media Player. Now Playing is such a wonderful device, which is why I would love to be able to use it in conjunction with Zune.
Well, thanks for all you've done for so many people by creating reliable, convenient, and free gadgets for everyone to use! I really appreciate your kindness!

Law James said...

Unfortunately Zune has no API so there's nothing I can do about that. I have looked into it previously.

Is this gadget no longer being worked on, or is Microsoft just having some sort of database issue?

I happened to find the original 4.05 file on my PC and took the liberty to upload it.
Get it here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/336413471/nowplaying.gadget.html
I hope the author doesn't mind...

Meanwhile, I have a problem that I can't fix. When I install the gadget, I have to select for which player I want to use it. I choose Winamp, but then the gadget gives this error: Notice: Error Downloading Plugin.
I think that the gadget attempts to download some additional files, but my firewall is blocking it. However, I'm not able to work around this. Disabling the firewall does not work.
Can somebody with this gadget check which files it attempts to download?

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I was too early in uploading to rapidshare.
You can also still obtain the file from MS:
http://gallery.live.com/liveItemDetail.aspx?li=a48e19bc-971e-4df3-a2c1-8a2cc6af0328

I still would appreciate any help regarding the plugin for winamp.

Sc4Freak said...

For Winamp, it attempts to download the following file:

http://galley78.f2s.com/plugins/NPWinamp.jpg

It then saves it as NPWinamp.exe in the \plugins folder. The domain gallery72.f2s.com seems to have expired or is unavailable.

I emailed the author about a month ago, and he said he was aware of the problem but was a bit busy to deal with it at the moment.

I love this gadget more than any other gadget that I use, but there is one thing that's been annoying. The gadget kinda flickers. A white background is appearing sometimes and it goes off after sometime and then shows up again.
Here is a snip:

and this is what it looks like when (I feel) it's getting buggy:
